Flushing Before Harvest: Necessary or Myth?

Flushing is one of the most argued-about practices in cultivation. The honest answer is that the evidence is weaker than the tradition, but the downside is small.

The traditional claim

Stopping nutrients for the final 1-2 weeks is said to force the plant to consume stored nutrients, producing a smoother smoke and a cleaner ash.

What is actually established

Controlled comparisons have found little to no difference in tested cannabinoid content or blind smoke-quality panels between flushed and unflushed plants. Harsh smoke correlates far more strongly with a bad dry and cure than with the final feed.

A sensible middle path

Taper feed strength over the last two weeks rather than cutting to zero. You avoid pushing excess salts into the plant at the end without starving it during the final bulking days.

Spend the effort here instead

A slow dry at 60-65°F and 60% RH over 10-14 days, followed by a proper jar cure with burping, does more for smoothness than any flush schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Should I flush coco or hydro too?
A shorter plain-water period is common in those media, but never let coco dry out during it.
