Low Stress Training (LST): Bend, Don't Break

LST is the highest-return technique available to a home grower. It costs nothing, stresses the plant very little, and can double the number of top-quality colas.

The principle

Cannabis sends growth hormone to the highest point. Bend that point sideways and every lower branch is suddenly the highest point, so they all take off. The result is a wide, flat canopy where a dozen sites get the same light instead of one dominant cola.

When to start

Begin around the fourth or fifth node, when stems are still flexible. Continue through veg and the first two weeks of flower, then stop — stems lignify and snap.

How to do it

Use soft plant ties or coated wire, never bare string that cuts into stems. Bend the main stem gently to horizontal and anchor it to the pot rim. Every few days, re-tie whatever has become tallest.

Mistakes

Bending too hard and creasing the stem, tying tightly enough to strangle growth, and stopping too early. If you crease a stem, tape it and it usually heals into a stronger knuckle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I LST autoflowers?
Yes, and it is the preferred training method for autos because it does not cost recovery time the way topping can.
