Autoflower vs Photoperiod: Which Should a First-Time Grower Pick?
The choice comes down to control versus simplicity. Neither is better in the abstract — they are better for different situations and different growers.
Autoflowers: fast and forgiving on schedule
Autos flower on age, not on light schedule. You can run 18/6 or even 20/4 from seed to harvest and never touch the timer. Seed to harvest is typically 10-12 weeks.
The tradeoff is that autos do not wait for you. A stalled week from transplant shock or a nutrient problem is a week of yield you never get back, because the plant flowers anyway.
Photoperiods: more control, more yield
Photoperiods stay in vegetative growth under 18/6 and only flower when you flip to 12/12. That means you decide the final plant size, you can train them heavily, and you can hold mothers and take clones.
They generally out-yield autos of similar genetics, and they recover from mistakes because you can simply veg longer.
Which to start with
If your space is short, your schedule is tight, or you want a harvest fast, run autos. If you want the biggest yield per plant, the ability to train, and repeatable results from clones, run feminized photoperiods.
