The four conditions that matter
Temperature between 40-47°F, relative humidity around 20-30%, total darkness, and an airtight container. A sealed glass jar with a silica pack in the back of a refrigerator hits all four.
What kills seeds
Temperature swings are worse than a slightly warm shelf. Repeated warm-cold cycles pull moisture in and out of the shell. Take the jar out, let it come to room temperature fully before opening, and condensation never forms inside.
Light and humidity are the other two killers. A baggie on a windowsill can cut viability in half in a single summer.
Freezing: usually not worth it
Freezing can work for long-term genetic preservation, but only with very low seed moisture content. For anything you plan to plant within a few years, the fridge is safer and simpler.
