What Size Grow Tent Do You Need?

Pick the tent by the space you have and the height you can clear, then size the light to the tent. Doing it in the other order leads to mismatched gear.

The sizes

  • 2x2: 1 plant, ~150W, great for a closet or a single auto
  • 3x3: 1-2 plants, ~300W, the sweet spot for a first grow
  • 4x4: 2-4 plants, ~450-500W, the most common home size
  • 5x5: 4-6 plants, 650W+, needs serious ventilation

Height matters more than people expect

You lose about 12-18 inches to the light, filter, and hanging hardware, plus a foot to the pot. A 5-foot tent leaves very little plant room. Choose 6.5 feet if you can.

Consider your plant limit

Legal home-grow rules cap plant counts per adult and per household in most states. Size your tent to grow fewer, larger plants well rather than more plants than you are allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grow without a tent?
Yes, in a closet or spare room, but a tent gives you reflective walls, light containment, and mounting points that are hard to replicate.
