Soil vs Coco vs Hydro: Choosing a Growing Medium
Your medium determines your watering frequency, your pH target, and how quickly mistakes hurt. Pick based on how much attention you can give, not on maximum theoretical yield.
Soil
Most forgiving and most buffered. A quality living soil often needs only plain water for weeks. Slower growth than coco or hydro, and corrections take longer to take effect. Best first choice.
Coco coir
A hydroponic medium that looks like soil. Fast growth and precise control, but it must be fed nutrients at every watering, kept at pH 5.8-6.2, and never allowed to dry out. Requires daily attention.
Hydroponics
DWC and recirculating systems produce the fastest growth. They also fail fastest — a pump failure or a warm reservoir can cost a plant in a day. Best for growers who enjoy the systems side.
Recommendation
Start in soil. Move to coco once watering and feeding are second nature. Move to hydro only if the equipment side genuinely interests you.
