Grow Room Electrical Safety Basics
A grow tent combines continuous high loads, water, and humidity. None of this is dangerous when set up correctly, and all of it is when it is not.
Know your circuit
A standard 15-amp household circuit safely carries about 1,440 watts continuous. Add up your light, fans, dehumidifier, and heat mat. If you are near that number, move something to another circuit.
No daisy chains
Never plug a power strip into another power strip. Use a single quality surge-protected strip rated for your load, plugged directly into the wall.
Water and cords
Keep all connections above the level of your pots and reservoirs. Use drip loops so any water running down a cord drips off before reaching the outlet. A GFCI outlet or adapter is inexpensive protection.
Heat check
Feel your plugs and strips occasionally. Anything warm to the touch is a warning. Discolored outlets or a burning smell means stop immediately.

- Can I run everything off one extension cord?
- Only a heavy-gauge cord rated well above your total load, and preferably not at all. Continuous loads deserve a direct connection.
