Solo Cup to Final Pot: A Simple Potting Plan for Home Growers
Pot size controls how fast soil dries, which controls how much oxygen roots get. Getting the progression right removes half the watering guesswork from a grow.
Why not start in the final pot
A tiny root system in five gallons of soil cannot drink what it is given. The soil stays wet for a week, oxygen never reaches the roots, and growth stalls. Small plants want small pots.
A workable progression
Solo cup for 2-3 weeks, a 1-2 gallon for 2-3 weeks, then a 5 gallon fabric pot for the rest of the grow. Most home photoperiod plants finish comfortably in 5 gallons.
Why fabric
Fabric pots air-prune roots at the wall instead of letting them circle, which produces a denser root ball. They also dry faster and more evenly, which makes overwatering much harder.
Autoflowers are the exception
Plant autos directly into their final 3-5 gallon pot and water only a small zone at first, widening the watered area as the plant grows.
