Hot, heavily amended soil burns seedlings. Dead, sterile soil starves them. This mix sits in the middle: lightly amended organic media with real biology in it.
It carries seedlings and early veg for two to three weeks before you need to feed anything, which is exactly the window where beginners tend to overdo nutrients.
Peat, perlite, worm castings, and compost give it drainage that forgives an occasional heavy watering.

- Around week three, or when the lowest leaves start to lighten. Start at quarter strength and work up.
- Do I need to pH my water in soil?
- Aim for 6.3-6.8. Soil buffers a lot, but far-off tap water will still lock out nutrients over time.
