Why Are My Buds Airy and Loose?
Loose, fluffy buds are disappointing at the end of a long grow. They almost always trace back to one of five causes, none of which is a bottle you forgot to buy.
1. Not enough light
The most common cause by far. Flower needs 700-900 PPFD at the canopy. Under-lit plants produce buds that look fine at a distance and compress to nothing in your hand.
2. Heat during flower
Sustained temperatures above 85°F reduce density and can cause foxtailing. Late flower prefers 68-78°F.
3. Harvested too early
Buds gain most of their density in the final two to three weeks. Trichome checking prevents impatient harvests.
4. Poor light penetration
Buds buried in the shade of the canopy stay larfy. Lollipop the bottom third and defoliate to open the interior.
5. Genetics
Some sativa-leaning lines simply produce looser flower. Density is not always a fault.
