Grow Room Climate: Temperature, Humidity, Airflow and Smell
Climate is where most grows quietly lose 20-30% of their potential. Get temperature, humidity, airflow and odor control right and the plants mostly take care of themselves.
Targets by stage
Young plants want warmth and moisture because their root systems cannot yet supply the leaves. Flowering plants want drier air because dense buds trap humidity inside and rot from the inside out.
- Seedling: 75-80F, 65-70% RH, VPD 0.4-0.8 kPa
- Vegetative: 75-82F, 55-65% RH, VPD 0.8-1.2 kPa
- Early flower: 72-80F, 50-55% RH, VPD 1.0-1.4 kPa
- Late flower: 68-76F, 45-50% RH, VPD 1.2-1.6 kPa
- Drying: 60-68F, 58-62% RH, no direct airflow on the buds
VPD is the number that ties them together
Humidity on its own means nothing without a temperature attached to it. Vapour pressure deficit combines both into the actual pull the air exerts on the leaf, which is what drives transpiration and therefore calcium and magnesium uptake.
Low VPD means sluggish growth and mould pressure. High VPD means closed stomata, tacoing leaves and stalled photosynthesis that growers usually misdiagnose as a nutrient issue.
Airflow and odor are the same system
One inline fan pulling through a carbon filter solves three problems at once: it removes heat and humidity, replaces stale air with fresh CO2, and scrubs the terpene smell out of the exhaust so the grow stays private.
Size the fan to exchange your tent volume roughly once per minute, then add oscillating clip fans so every leaf is gently moving. Still air is where powdery mildew and fungus gnats start.

- 75-82F with 55-65% humidity in vegetative growth, and 68-78F with 45-55% humidity in flower. Drop humidity toward 45% in the final weeks of flower to reduce bud rot risk.
- Does a carbon filter really stop grow smell?
- Yes, when it is sized correctly and installed on the exhaust so the tent runs at slight negative pressure. Air pulled through activated charcoal leaves with the terpene odor removed. Replace the carbon roughly every 12-18 months of continuous use.
- How big an inline fan do I need?
- Calculate tent volume in cubic feet and pick a fan rated for at least that many CFM, then add about 25% for carbon filter resistance and ducting bends. A 4-inch fan suits tents up to 3x3; a 6-inch fan covers 4x4 and 5x5.
