Curing Cannabis in Jars: Burping Schedule and Targets

By The Budometry TeamPublished Updated

Curing is a slow chemical process that breaks down chlorophyll and residual sugars. It is the difference between harsh flower and smooth flower, and it costs you nothing but patience.

Part of our pillar guide: Harvest, Dry and Cure: Getting the Last 30% Right

Jar it correctly

Fill wide-mouth glass jars about three quarters full — the flower needs headspace air to exchange with. Store at 62-70°F in the dark.

The burping schedule

Week 1: open each jar for 10-15 minutes once or twice a day. Week 2: once a day for 5 minutes. Week 3 and beyond: once every few days. If you smell ammonia, the flower went in too wet — leave the jar open longer or dry it out further.

Use a hygrometer

A small hygrometer in each jar removes the guesswork. Hold 58-62%. Above 65% is mold risk; below 55% and the cure stalls and the flower gets brittle.

How long

Two weeks is a real improvement, four to eight weeks is where most flower peaks, and quality holds for months in stable conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do humidity packs work?
Yes, for holding a finished cure steady. They do not substitute for the exchange of air during the first two weeks.
